floribus et dulci aspirans complectitur umbra.
hic uer purpureum atque alienis mensibus aestas,
hic liquidi fontes, hic caeli tempore certo
dulcia mella premunt, hic candida populus antro
imminet et lentae texunt umbracula uites.
inuitant croceis halantes floribus horti
inter odoratum lauri nemus ipsaque tellus

continuo noua lux oculis effulsit; at illi
terrentur uisu subito nec plura morati
corpora sub ramis obtentu frondis inumbrant:
consertum tegumen: nec spes opis ulla dabatur.
at non haec nullis hominum rerumque repertor
obseruans oculis caedes et facta tyranni
praesensit: notumque furens quid femina posset.
continuo inuadit: 'procul, o procul este profani
conclamat, caelum ac terras qui numine firmat.
atque illi longe gradientem ac dira frementem
ut uidere, metu uersi retroque ruentes
diffugiunt siluasque et sicubi concaua furtim
saxa petunt. piget incepti lucisque, neque auras
dispiciunt: taedet caeli conuexa tueri.
Nec longum in medio tempus, cum creber ad auras
uisus adesse pedum sonitus genitorque per auras
hunc, ubi uix multa maestum cognouit in umbra
talibus alloquitur dictis atque increpat ultro:
'infelix, quae tanta animum dementia cepit?
quis furor iste nouus? quo nunc, quo tenditis' inquit
'regnorum immemores, quae mentem insania mutat?
dicite, quae lucis miseris tam dira cupido?
maturate fugam totoque absistite luco:
nec reuocare gradum, si quando aduersa uocarint,
est licitum; flammis ambit torrentibus amnis
per medium stridens torquetque sonantia saxa

ille sub haec: 'tua me, genitor, tua tristis imago
his posuere locis: merui nec deprecor', inquit
'omnipotens, sonitumque pedum uocemque tremesco
conscius audacis facti: monitisque sinistris

illa dolos dirumque nefas sub pectore uersans
insontem infando indicio, moritura puella
dum furit, incautum crudeli morte peremit;

ut uidi, ut perii, | ut me malus abstulit error,

tum pater omnipotens solio sic infit ab alto:
'accipite ergo animis atque haec mea figite dicta:
tuque prior, scelere ante alios immanior omnis,

'at tibi pro scelere' exclamat, 'pro talibus ausis
omne aeuum ferro teritur, primusque per artem
