Adjectives of the vowel declension

English translation by Bruna Pogliano

The classification of Greek adjectives is quite similar to the classification of Latin adjectives. Adjectives of the vowel declension inflect with the same endings of 1st and 2nd declension nouns, while adjectives of the Consonant declension are inflected like 3rd declension nouns.

Adjectives of the Vowel declension are classified into two groups with regard to inflection:

  1. Adjectives with 3 endings, by far the most numerous, have specific endings for each of the three genders, namely, feminine adjectives are declined like first declension nouns while masculines and neuters follow the second declension, just as Latin adjectives do.
    Feminine endings are consistent with those of nouns in -ᾱ. Consequently, feminine adjectives inflect like nouns in -ᾱ pure if the noun stem ends with ε, ι or ρ; while in all other instances -ᾱ impure changes to η; as far as the accent is concerned, unlike nouns, feminine adjectives have perispomenon genitive plural ending only if the adjective is oxytone in the nominative singular;
  2. Adjectives with 2 endings, less numerous, feature masculine endings also for feminine adjectives, which do not have specific endings. This group consists of all compound adjectives, i.e.: adjectives which are either made up of more than one stem or formed by adding a prefix or suffix to the stem.

Besides, some adjectives with 3 endings sometimes behave like 2-ending, typically, masculine endings can be used for the feminine.
